well im not sure what happened.one of my buddies was on it.it had ran fine all day.well he rolls up.it wasnt running he said he hit the kill switch.i went to start it back up.always starts on the first kick when warm.i kicked it three times and it sounded wierd, like it didnt have spark or something.then i kicked it again and it gave a pop out the exhaust and just locked up.the kicker wont move at all.what do you think happened?when i took the plug out it was brown and was kind of white on one side.so i figure it ran lean for some reason.had good compression and not even 30 hrs on rebuild.so im told.ive put about 15 on it and the guy whe i bought it said he had put about 15 on it.the jetting is right on.the plug is always a brown color.im mixing 20:1.it had new mainberings, bore, piston, rings, gaskets in september of 2003.im running a NGK BR8ES plug.please help me out guys.i just got the quad a couple weeks ago.had ran fine all day.im going to buy a clymer manual.i am quite mechanically inclined.so im gonna do the work myself.
do they make clymer manuals for the 89's?ive only seen them for the 85-88

Until you get it apart it's hard to say. One thing is for sure, if you kicked it over it did not heat seize. A wild shot in the dark tells me that the ports were not chamfered enough and you hung a ring. Could it be something else beside the top end?

how do you get the piston off of the rod?im not sure what went wrong.the rings are still on the piston.the ports dont look damaged.but on both sides of the piston top and both sides of the head there are gouges.and on one side it looks as if something came up through the piston.it looks like a thick ring with an L lip on it???im lost on this one.there is even damage on one side of the bottom of the piston edge.ill try to take some pics.
I dont understand why it didnt start when i kicked it.anybody know why?

Ouch, that bites.
To get the piston off you have to remove the circlips on the wrist pin, and slide the wrist pin out. Be sure to put a rag over the bottom end so you don't drop anything in it.....those circlips have a way of falling when you least expect it!
The part with the "L" lip, do you think it's maybe the end of one of your rings? The rings do have a notch on the end of them.
Looks like you're gonna have to do a top end. Have it bored, new piston, rings, and circlips should fix her right up.
