Default DirtWheels Article comparing the Quadzilla to Banshee

My long rod stroker zilla 560cc will beat up on a 410 trinity powervalve setup on a banshee ($7,000 motor setup) but can't hang with the 535 trinity package (10,000+ setup).
I agree the zillas are much more fun to ride and with a little chrome are nicer looking bikes, but the banshees are much more fun to start.
BTW, my zilla (250 frame 560cc zilla motor, chrome everything- suspension, aarms, swingarm, steering stem, etc) for sale for only $4000.

I've been hearing more of this happening concerning the 500 on the 250 frame. I'm not being critical but why would you want to do it? There must be a good reason but i guess i just need to know what it is. Seems like a lot of trouble.

better handling, 51 lbs lighter...

It's like the difference between an escalade and a corvette, both have the same motor, but one is a lot more fun to drive and is a lot faster than the other.

Yes, it's a lot of money and trouble to build.

MJM, you're saying there's a 51 pound difference between the 250 rolling chassis compared to the 500?

I would think there's at least a 51 lb difference, if not more. Definitely more if your talking about an 85 or 86 250. The claimed dry weight of the 85 and 86 250 was only 293 lbs. The later years varied, but they ranged from about 325 to 330. The claimed dry weight of the zilla was always 392. So it was about 100 lbs heavier than the 85 and 86 250, and about 60 - 70 lbs heavier than the later year 250.

I read a post once from someone who put the lt500 motor in a honda 250R chassis. They said they beefed up the suspension for the added weight of the motor, but it really wasn't necessary because the 500 motor only weighed about 10 lbs more than the 250R motor it replaced. I would assume the later year LT250 motor weighs roughly the same as the honda. That would mean the chassis weight difference between the later year 250 would be between 50 and 60 lbs. I would guess the chassis weight difference between the 85/86 250 and the zilla is probably at least 70 lbs.

I'd be interested to hear what the actual weights are from anyone who has built a hybrid and weighed the chassis and motors. Anyone?

to guess, 500 motor is around 15 lbs heavier but the chassis is around 67 lbs lighter I have read... net difference of 50 lbs, add aluminum motor mounts, grind off unneeded frame, take away swing arm linkage for direct mount shock in rear and is easy to be 70 lbs lighter than a 500.

Hi,
I've done over a dozen LT250/500 hybrids.
It's the only way to go IMO if you want to go fast for cheap.
85-86 LT250Rs are 293ish stock, 87-92 LT250Rs are about 10-15 lbs more and the LT500s are 100 lbs heavier.
The LT500 motor is about 15 lbs heavier than the LT250Rs.
That's a net 85lbs lighter 85-86 hybrid and 70-75 lbs lighter on the 87-92s.
It is VERY easy w/some clean-up and sand tires to get an LT250/500 hybrid under 300lbs.
The math is simple............... 400 lbs and 45ish RWHP on a stock Zilla is about 9 lbs per HP.
Take the same stock motor and put it in a 85-86 LT 250 chassis w/ONLY my hybrid pipe and carb mods it will be about 60 HP and 310 lbs which is about 5.15 lbs per HP.
We have duner/gas motors making mid 80s HP on the stock carb............ (reworked of course)
Lbs/HP is the biggest factor in what determines acceleration.
Plug your estimated HP in and figure it out for yourself.
Look at my pics for some examples.

RK,that is a real racing pipe you got there,i've seen severals combustion chamber
on very highly modified sleds, and the design was exactly the same profile of that pipe.

Hi,
Sorry, but it's not a sled pipe................ or based on a sled pipe.
They may look similar to the naked eye but they are way different.
A sled pipe operates in a very narrow RPM range because of the CVT.
I designed it/tested it/paid for the tooling and built it.
Over the years I have probably designed/built/developed at least 20 different pipes for the Quadzilla motors.
It's what I specialize in...................Zillas.
I'm glad you like it though as it's the best one yet and pushes the Zilla motors to a whole new level of performance.
I think I have the gas/duner/hillshooter motors into the 90s HP wise but justy haven't been back on the dyno to verify what it shows in the real world.
Only an eddy current dyno w/the proper load setting shows the "real" numbers and they are hard to come by.
Thanks,
RK
