Just bought a 07 Z400, the thing has just about 1 hour on it. It's been raining like crazy here in texas and I haven't had a chance to take it out. The rain let up for a few hours yesterday and I was able to take it on a 20 min ride behind my house. I wasn't using more that 1/4 throttle or so and I noticed a ticking sound from the engine. My first thought was valves. Seeing as how this thing is brand new, I don't know if I should take it in to the dealer or just wait until I've had a chance to ride it for a couple of hours and see if it's still doing it. What says the group?

 

how loud is the ticking? If it's pretty loud and doesn't sound right, get it in right away. You made a good guess. You may have a valve that didn't get QC'd

 

It's not loud, just a steady ticking. Doesn't sound "wrong". Heck, for all I know, that's the way the z sounds. If I ever get a chance to ride it, I'll have to see how it does.

 

The ticking sound isn't a normal one.

Now is the best time to get it into the shop. We're not missing any riding time with all this rain.

Did the dealer throw in a life vest too? [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img] We got more water than trails around here.

 

it probably is the valve(s) if you get a tune-up they will fix it its part of the tune-up

 

I think it was a false alarm. Was able to take it on another short ride tonight and it didn't sound any different than any other 4 stroke atv/dirtbike I've ridden. I also have a honda recon and compared the two and didn't hear any obvious differences.

 

Probably just the cam chain. Ever Suzuki I've ever ridden has a little bit of a tick when under load.
