Default We Have Liftoff

After meticulously cleaning and soaking the carb and finally finding that I had a dirt dauber's nest in the white plastic jug thing that's part of the air filter system, I got my freebie LT230GE running like a top.

'Bout the only thing that needs some attention is the clutch cable is a bit stretched, I'll just replace it as opposed to adjusting it. I got all my hunting gear loaded and strapped down to the rack and rode around the lawn for a while tonight. A guy that I was going to get to work on it if I couldn't fix it said he could get almost $800 for it and asked if I'd take $600 for it. I got it from my Dad so it's staying right where it is.

It didn't have an air filter when I got it so I have a sock over the little cage at the moment and adjusted the A/F so it's not too lean or rich. My new one is supposed to be here next Wednesday.

Other than my time all I got in this thing is a new battery, air filter, oil, carb cleaner and gas. It's definitely got some get up and go, that's for sure. I'm so looking forward to going to the hunting lease Friday morning. I hunted Saturday and had at least 1.5 miles of walk up hill on an old logging road that twists and turns to go half a mile as the crow flies. Coming back down hill isn't that much better with a rifle, ground blind on my back and other gear.

I'll quit babbling, I'm just so happy.

Good for you man and welcome to the forums , Suzuki makes some tough and very reliable machines ; enjoy your ride and good hunting the quad will come in handy getting to your camp and make it easier getting your game out of the woods !

And yes the old Dirt Daubers nest i've found them in some strange places over the years , i found one in the exhaust(muffler) on a new Snapper Line Trimmer my uncle bought from a local Home Depot end of season sale (Display Unit/No Box) ; he stored it in his shed untill spring before trying it out and didn't bag it !

When he prepped it he couldn't get it to start even after installing a new spark plug it still wouldn't start so he brought to me to look it over before taking it back to Home Depot , it had a good spark and it was getting fuel the air filter was clear ; but i noticed there wasn't any air coming from the exhaust when i stuck a small screwdriver into the muffler tip dirt spilled out !

The old "Dirt Daubers nest inside the muffler" trick they will build their nests in some very strange places , rodents (mice, rats even squirrels) will nest in any opening big enough for them to squeeze into especially when their natural enviroment is destroyed or becomes to harse from heavy rainstroms ; they will adapt to anything to survive !........

lol! Kinda reminds me of that part in "Slingblade" where the guy brings in the mower and Carl says, "It ain't got no gas."

It took almost two weeks of what little spare time I had to get it to where I felt comfortable I wouldn't get stranded in the woods. I feel it's just as reliable right now as any ATV can be, yet subject to the freak occurences that can happen to anything.

The last person to ride it put it up dirty and caked with mud and then it sat at least another year. I cleaned all the mechanical parts and made sure everything that required oil or grease had fresh. I do have a very small 3 drop/week oil drip from underneath that I'll get to, but pretty solid for a 23 yr old machine.

A new clutch cable is next on the agenda and probably some new tires for the rear. It looks like all 4 tires are brand new, but they sat flat for who knows how long and the rears are cracking. The fronts look awesome and they all hold air fine, but the rear ones look like an accident looking for a location.

If the odometer hasn't been tampered with, it appear to have a little over 2440 miles on it. I like that it has a trip on it so I'll know how far I've traveled to my stands and so forth.

The lease I'm on right now is only a bit under 400 acres, yet still too much to walk with all your gear on your back and drag a deer. I've been excepted into a new lease next year that's almost 2000 acres and I feel MUCH better about having an ATV to get around. There's one guy in my lease now without an ATV and he's limited to the bottom. It's just too much work getting to the top of the ridge with a lot of gear.

A lot of back reading here got me thru this restoration, thanks guys.

There are many members on these forums who have exspearious with all the name brands of ATV's that can give you very good info how to repair and trouble shoot problems with every part of a quad , 3 of my cousins own Yamaha , Kawasaki and Honda ATV's new and used ; my first time on a quad was a new 1985 Honda TRX350FM 4x4 that belonged to a buddy who kept it at my cousins house to let me ride i was hooked on it after my first ride !

It was 3 yrs later before i could afford to buy my own , in 89' his eldest brother and i bought our first quad ; his was a new 1989 Suzuki LT4WD 250 QuadRunner 4x4 and mine was an idenical 1986 Honda TRX350FM 4x4 with 20 hrs on it and had a SuperWinch 2000lb on an identcial custom bumper mount when i bought it from the original owner !

These were and still are very good ATV's and my cousin bought another new 1993 Suzuki LT4WD 300 KQ 2 weeks before the Blizzard of 93' , and over the next 6 yrs we put alot of joyfull miles on these machines in all kinds of terrain ; riding creeks with some deep holes , mountain trails , swamps you name it and we rode them !

After my cousin passed away in late 99' i bought his 93' Suzuki LT4WD 300 KQ and kept both so i would have a spare to lend to my brothers , family and freinds so i wouldn't have to ride alone ; i finally sold the 86' Honda to my youngest brother in Nov. 2005 and kept the 93' Suzuki 300 KQ then sold it to his wife one week after i bought my first new quad a 2006 Arctic Cat 400 FIS Auto with the Suzuki 376cc engine/tranny and so far it has been a very reliable quad !

I have alot of good and a few scary memories from all the rides my cousin , brothers and other family and freinds have riden over 19 yrs ; and i wouldn't trade one minute of those rides together for anything and i hope we have many more yrs to ride together !

Thats why i aways stress that everyone i ride with always wears helmets and saftey gear both when they ride with me and everytime they ride without me ; and always thread lightly and safey the anti's take every oppertunity to use anything they can to stop the sport we all love so much !

So enjoy your quad and always remember to wear your helment and saftey gear everytime you ride , thread lightly and be safe so we all can enjoy the sport for many more yrs to come ; best of luck hunting and keep your quad mantained and it will last you a lifetime !....... Oh yes i remember Sling Blade that was a very good movie , ole Billy Bob Thornton really impressed me with his performance in that movie ; it shocked me when i learned that was him playing this role great acting !!!!!!5 Stars in my opinion i don't think anyone else could've done a better job of acting !.............
