1987 Suzuki Quadsport lt230s Problems

I traded a guy a really old powerbook laptop g4 from 2002 for it and it had all new plastics and everything. It didn't run. I replaced the spark plug coil and cleaned out the carb and gas tank. The petcock was clogged. It started on first kick. Now that it runs, when I hold the clutch in I can shift into first, but its hard to shift to first because my gear shifter sucks. Anyone know of a good aftermarket one?

Also, so when I get it into first or second, it runs very slow, way to slow, even at full throttle and the carb is spotless. Maybe 5 to 15mph tops in any gear. It's way way to slow. It idles fine and and I can get it to idle without the choke. Would this be a clutch problem?

Also, does anyone know how to adjust the decompressor, can't find anything on it.

Also, last thing, when in gear, I have to hold the clutch in to go anywhere no matter what and if I let go, it stalls? Anyone have any idea what that might be?

If anyone has any advice or maybe parts of the manual with the clutch and decompressor and engine diagrams and take apart guides, let me know, I could really use the help. Thanks so much!

When you say it runs to slow in gear, do you mean the motor revs out and sounds normal, but it just doesn't move quickly? If so, the clutch is probably shot. That would require at least new fiber plates, but the steels and springs should also go since you probably don't know the last time they were freshened up. Also, the clutch basket itself may have wear in it and need replacing. Only way to find out is open her up. The difficulty shifting could be caused by a broken clutch plate, which would be a more extreme case of clutch wear.

Yeh, I can rev the engine and push the throttle all the way in and it still goes slow, no matter what gear. I know the actual shifter is broken because I was able to fix it by bending a couple of the nuts, but as soon as they became loose again, it stopped shifting good again, so I was looking for another shifter that might fit it that doesn't go through all those weird shifting combinations, but something that just connects right to the engine.

A yamaha blaster shifter is a perfect fit. The right bend and length.
