When I put my 86 LT250R in neutral and don't give it any gas, the engine rev's up real loud. I mean this quad rev's up full throtle and sounds like it is about to blow up and when i give it a little gas it goes down and then gets real loud again. What is wrong? Thabks

Its something to do with the carb slide or cable. Take apart the carb and check everything over.

you have an intake leak. Somewhere either in your reed asembly or crank seals

Air leak, most likely the base gasket. The 86 doesn't have a seperate gasket for the reed cage since it is built into the cylinder. If you don't find the leak there it is a problem with the carb, possible the float level is too low (below the pilot jet) thats why it richens up when you open the throttle it is sucking more gas through the main jet, then when it starts to run out of gas again it leans out.

If it doesn't turn out to be an air leak (intake boot, main bearing seals, etc...) check your carb slide. More specifically, check the area where the idle screw contacts it. If this area is severely worn, the slide will not be held up enough. This causes the air to be routed through the choke circuit (I believe) and will race the engine with the throttle closed. This happened to my '88 500 so I replace the slide (around $35) and the problem went away. I have since replaced the whole carb with an aftermarket one however.

CHECK FOR ALL THE ABOVE LISTED PROBLEMS BECAUSE THEY CAN CAUSE THIS, ALSO MAKE SURE NO TO OVER OIL YOU AIR FILTER BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN MORE THAN ONE SUCK THE TACKY OIL IN AND THIS WILL CAUSE THE SLIDE TO STICK. ALSO CHECK THE REEDS IF ONE IS CRACKED OR MISSING YOU WILL GET ERATIC REVING OUT OF THE ENGINE, THIS IS HARD FOR YOU BECAUSE 85 AND 86 MODELS YOU GOTTA TAKE THE CYLINDER OFF BUT ON THE UP SIDE THIS WILL GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO CHECK THE TOP END AND THROW IN SOME NEW RINGS. HOPE THIS HELPS.
