86 lt230s quadsport rebuild help

so ive recently purchased a 1986 230 quadsport its pretty beat up. it runs but it smokes a good bit and ive been told by a few people ts the rings. so ive decided to get a hole new piston and rings kit. i may even bore it out but it depends on how much work and cash its gonna take.. my question is what exactly do i have to do to bore it out any help is much appreciated. im new to the atv world and i wanna get it running good and possibly add a little more power to it. so step by step what would i have to do to bore it out? thank you in advance.

Take it to a machine shop or on ebay, you can see listings for bore and hone jobs for $60 and it includes return shipping. You send them the piston and rings and they will bore it, hone it, and send it back to you for $60. Oversized pistons and rings are about $60 on ebay also, so it will cost you about $120. Also, you need to check for up and down play in the rod. If the rod moves up and down at all, you need a new rod and rod bearing installed, which means you need to split the bottom cases. A new rod is about $75 on ebay and it comes with a rod bearing, crank pin, and washers. A dealer will install it the new rod for about $40. So overall, you will probably have to put $250 into the engine at the most, plus about $35 for a full engine gasket kit. So about $280 at the most, and maybe $120 if your rod is good.

don't forget this

I have a 87 230 sport, as my second quad. Make sure you have the chain tightened just right because your chain will spin off so fast and break your case it's not even funny. just a word of advice. I broke three stater cases on mine. good luck 230's rock, great first quad, rips trails!:D
