i just picked up this leftover 08 ltz400 from a local dealer
i do alot of trail ridning and am looking for more response in 3rd gear
any mods i can do...CHEAPLY...was thinking about 13 front sprocket

Re gearing is a great, cheap idea, puts the power down where you want it. Put some vents in the lid, or replace it with an Outerwears cover (20 bucks) and rejet, like running with the lid off, BIG air flow increase. The stock muffler is very restrictive, if you can get a baffle insert for it, that would help, best thing is to replace it, but then you are looking at 3-400 bucks, unless you can find a good used slip on on eBay or someplace. Check Dennis Kirk and Rocky Mt ATV, they have clearance and discontinued sales all the time, might get a good deal there.
