Dropped the head and cylinder off to have the machine work done this morning. No idea when I will get them back. Right now I am struggling with the screws that hold the oil pump on, I cannot get them to turn to save my life and, as is usually the case with my so ever organized tools, I cannot find my impact driver. I will have to go buy one after work to get these screws out.

Split the cases and pulled the crank, I will get it in the mail tomorrow. I am trying to figure out if I have to take all the trans gears out or not. At this point I see no reason to do it.

I changed my mind and took the transmission gears and shafts out. I am replacing all the bearings in the case. The thought of putting this all back together and then having a bearing go bad was too much for me to take.

I hammered out all the bearings this morning, they all came out pretty easily. The crank is in the mail to Mr. Crankshaft, the frame is still being powder coated, the cylinder and head are at the machine shop and I am waiting for the bearings from a couple of different sources. I ordered some from Grainger, they should be here this week. The others are coming from other places and could take a while.

In the meantime I was going to start painting some of the other parts, but, I think my time maybe better spent putting the transmission back together a couple of times to make sure I have it down when the crank and bearings arrive. Shift forks and I tend not to get along, meaning I cannot ever seem to remember how they go back together correctly. That means I should probably replace all the snap rings, but that probably should be done anyway. Between the two manuals (one factory, one after market) and the many pictures hopefully I can get it figured out.

Speaking of pictures, here are some more. Not very interesting, but maybe in the future if someone is trying to figure out how these go back together the pictures will help.

EDIT**** I moved all the pictures into a public album, which of course, broke all the links. The album can be found here: http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z...30s%20rebuild/

The four wheeler has been sitting for a while so obviously I have some rust issues. I tried some Evapo-rust and it works pretty well. I will post some pictures of before and after later today.

I cannot get much else done other than cleaning up parts for a while as I have to wait for the frame, swingarm, cylinder, head and crank/rod to be finished and returned to me.

Crankshaft and rod are on the way home now. In the meantime I decided to replace the rear axle bearings....and...the first disaster of this rebuild occurred. I broke the housing taking the bearing out. The first one came out pretty easy with a little heat and some slamming it on a wooden workbench. The second was being more difficult. I did something stupid and did not stop to think when I was getting agitated and smacked the bearing with a punch and hammer. The bearing kicked sideways (of course). I knew it was all over but the crying at that point. Anyway, I heated it up trying to punch it out even though I knew it was probably not going to end well. It did not. Broken rear bearing carrier. I will have to order a new one, I have not decided if I will just get a used one from ebay or if I will order a new aluminum one from one of the suppliers on the net. Oh well, my own stupidity. That does not happen much anymore, I am older and have learned to think before swinging a hammer, but tonight I did not do that.

Cleaned up and primed some parts, otherwise I have just been waiting.

Got the crank back from Vince at Mr. Crankshaft today. I can't say enough nice things about the guy and he does quality work:

I just need the main bearings to arrive and I can start putting the engine back together.

Put the case in the oven for 20 minutes, already had the bearings in the freezer all day. They all fell right into place. One side left to go and then I will put in the crank.

The bearing in the other case slipped right in as well. Now, I just have to figure out how to get this smell out of the kitchen.

The crankshaft and trans will have to wait until tomorrow night, NHL playoffs are starting. Hoping the Capitals don't ruin my good day.
