lt80 help.

I picked up a 2002 lt80 for my son. I bought it from a guy that said his kids were riding it, put it up and then it wouldn't start. I got it home did some google research and pushed the breaker under the seat and it turned over. Petcock valve was rusted apart so I replaced that. Drained the bowl, put fresh gas in it and it wouldn't start. Put a new plug in it, a little gas in the spark plug hole and still wont start. Ive got fuel, and spark. I borrowed a compression tester and it shows 62 at best. Shot a squirt of oil in the cylinder and put the plug back in and it started. Idled for a minute or so white smoke the whole time, gave it gas revved up good then eventually died and wont start again. Im not confident that the compression checker was accurate. Would it start with 60psi?

Welcome to the forums.
As you seen it took oil to raise the comp enough to start.
I didn't see where you removed the carb and cleaned (removing both jets, needle seat and cleaning well)which would be a mandatory thing after sitting.

I haven't touched the carb yet, Im surprised that the shot of wd40 raised the compression enough to make a difference. Ill pull the topend off tonight and post some pics. Thanks for the reply.

LT80, whats a good top end kit to buy? I see they start out around 40 bucks on ebay.

You said oil.. LOL
WD works like starting fluid in 2 strokes.
I bought one of those kits to check it out. For a stock application, they should work fine. The ports need chamfored a lil tho.

I see where they get them. Imported for around 15 bucks for a kit. It said "good oil retention". That tells me that the steel used is less than optimum IMO.
I pay $55 for a piston alone.

I bought this one to try. Hopefully I will put it on the shelf for a spare and not need to replace everything.

I looked at those kits. I just can't imagine they will hold up.

I would have thought the same thing. The guy has sold 257 kits to date and I could only find one negative comment. We'll see if works.
