Gearing question for lt80
 

Hello, I just put new gears in my lt80.. I used the #40 chain with a 13 front .. 26 rear. Just curious if I geared up or down or stayed the same ? I had stock gearing .. I believe .. 10-22. Just trying to keep up with the other lt80's in the family :D Thanks guys

Your going to go a lil faster with a 13/26.
12/26 would be stock.

I just joined this site because of yours and other great posts about the lt80. just got two lt80's for my twin boys. bought Midwest mini gear kit 13/25, 420 chain. whats the difference between that and 13/26? is low end better with 26? or should I stay stock 10/22 or just go to 11 front with stock chain? live in CA so ride hard pack some sand but not dunes. what do you think on gearing? thanks

Bigger on front= faster
bigger on rear= slower
So the 25 is a smidge slower than the 26.
Since you have the 25, I'd go with it. That's my answer to the 11/22 w/520 chain question too.
I prefer the 428 sprockets. I use #40 chain from a tractor supply or MSCDirect.com. It's like 15-20 bucks or so for 10 ft. It's obviously a lighter chain but I've not had any problems. When you start to worry about wear you simply make another chain from the bulk and you're good to go for a while again.
428 chain rolls much more easy than the 520. #40 chain rolls much more easy than 428.

I bought the Midwest chain sprocket kit so il keep that 428 chain for one of them since I already bought it and go 13/25 428 chain for that machine and il buy #40 chain and sprockets from for my other lt80, plus that will help me compare the 2. Yes I have been reading all your posts about all of the mods so one of these days il try myself or probably will send to you for help. Take care

FYI: a #40 chain will fit a 13/26 perfect. No adjuster needed. :)

Sorry to keep beating this subject but other posts seem to be with mods for there gearing. So my question is what would you go with for my other lt80 one is 13/25 with 428 chain that one is set for now but my other one is stock. So should I go with 1 up on front 11/22, 428 sprockets with #40 chain (which I found on line) or 13/26 428 sprockets #40 chain. don't worry about money just looking for your honest opinion without budget in mind. I guess whast the difference in torque and speed between the two 13/26 vs 11/22? its stock bike with wheel spacers 18-8-8 tires, Midwest reed upgrade and that's it. kids are 7 and I want them to be able to climb hills and have good speed but they don't race and we ride hard pack some sand but not straight dunes. live in So Cal. The 11/22 is with 520 pitch chain. If you have a LT80 1989 or newer it will be a 10/22 520 pitch.
In other words, you cannot use 11/22 with 428/40 chain pitch.
11/22 or 13/26..about the same in speed/torque.
I like the 428 pitch sprockets and chain (#40 is the same pitch). Because the machine will roll easyier.

I'd prolly go with the same gearing on both quads.That'd make it fair to the kiddies. :D

Listen to Jack. He knows his stuff! One tiny correction though. The 25 on the rear will actually be slightly faster than a 26 on the rear. As Jack said, bigger on rear means slower, so naturally smaller on the rear means faster.

Just divide the number of teeth on the front over the number of teeth on the back. The larger the fraction, the faster it's geared. The '87 and '88 model with the 428 chains from the factory were actually geared ever so slightly faster, but probably not enough to be noticeable.

'87 & '88: 12/26 gearing = 0.461538 final drive ratio
'89 & later: 10/22 gearing = 0.454545 final drive ratio

By running a 13/25 combo, your final drive ratio will be 0.52. That will actually be a noticeable difference.

As an FYI, I'm getting ready to run a 14/26 combo (0.538462 ratio). I wouldn't recommend gearing them up this high normally, but I'm going to be running a little smaller rear race tire, and I've got a motor that SCREAMS. Somehow, it seems to have Moore power that most other LT80's.
