Default Z400 running hot

I have a 2014 ltz400 that the light has been coming on showing it's running hot. Antifreeze is full in the radiator and overfill and the radiator is clean of debris. Anyone know what may be causing this issue?

Could be something as simple as air bubbles in the system. Is the fan coming on?

The fan is turning on but it doesn't shut off. Just keeps running.

Give the radiator a really good cleaning..... On the outside. Mud/dirt between the fins.

Does it seem to have excessive heat coming up from the motor other than just seein the light. They have a temp sensor and a thermostat in them. Could have a bad temp sensor or bad tstat. Have you had the coolant system open and had to refill? It could be air in system.

The radiator is clean. I made sure of that after I noticed the issue. And I've not had it apart to refill. What's a good way to test to see if the temp sensor or thermostat are bad? Also found out that my buddy added a octane booster to his fuel that I used. Could this be causing that issue?

Looks like the radiator sensor completes the ground path like the ones on Polaris atvs do. You can pull the connector and check resistance on the leads. Should show some resistance when cold and drop when hot which opens the ground path for the fan to kick on. Since you say the fan runs constantly, probably the sensor has shorted. If the ohm meter shows continuity on the switch wires then that could be the reason for the fan constantly running. Over heating also could be trapped air in the cooling system. Leave the cap off, raise the front end and at an idle see if you can remove any trapped air bubbles. Hope this helps in some way. Here's the radiator and sensor. Item#12 on the radiator break down. http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/...6066#sch506873 If it's a faulty sensor, you may be able to match one up at an auto supply and just splice in your factory connector rather than paying big bucks for an oem sensor.

You can usually feel that the hoses are warm and tight plus you should be able to see coolant circulating at the top of the radiator if the water pump is working ok and the thermostat is opening.
