Crankshaft slack.... Should I run my quad with horizontal play?

well, should I? [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img]

The rod plays side to side, but not up and down... The previos owner said this is alright...

Yup.....Oh, turn the motor over slowly and grab ahold of the rod (not yours, the one in the engine[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]) and try to "feel" any rough spots on the big rod bearing.

umkay, the new piston is already in... So, is it impossible to check if the rod is bad?

the only way know is by sound and by oil samples !!

Here, I'll try to elaborate more than "yup". If the connecting rod does not move side-to-side, it would be have to be up against something to keep it from moving in that direction, which means there would be friction, as in metal against metal, then SQUEEEEEAAAAAKKKKK. There, hope that helped a little more.

when i got my 88 quadracer the man bearings where bad so i split the case and put new mains in and a new hot rod crank and bearing. there is sopposed to be play from side to side in the crank. but where the piston connects to the rod their should be two thrust washers one on each side of the crank this will elemate all the play in you crank. if the washers are not installed the rod will run on one side of the crank and cause one the main bearings to go bad. hope this helps!
