I'm done my break in for my Z now. I have the oil and oil filter that came with the quad still in the quad. I think its time to change the oil but I don't have a new oil filter. I think it would be better to change the oil without changing the filter than to not change the oil and filter at the same time. So is it OK for me to change my oil without changing my filter? If not how long can you run the orginal oil and filter safely? Thanks.

Yes, it's fine. My dealer even said change it every otehr time you change the oil. Cars are the same way. Most people change them at the same time just to keep up on the filter too.
Being the first oil change, I would want to get that filter off there, but you waon't hurt anything. It captures everything and holds it in there, just needs to be kept clean and free flowing.

BTW, can't we just use the bike filter? What does it look like in there once you take the cap off? Looks impossible to get a normal filter wrench on it.

i think you should change the filter also since your going to get alot of metal flakes on the filter the first time around. that's why they make you change them after only 10 hours. parts need to sit and "match" together and with this process alot of metal get's taken out.

Amounts are approximate in this example, but...

Take 2 quarts of clean oil.
Add .5 quart of dirty oil (what's inside the old filter.)

What do you then have?

2.5 quarts of dirty oil!

Filters are cheap, engines are expensive.

Replace the filter at every oil change.

The reason I ask is because I can't get my filter for another few weeks. I'll call tomorrow to make sure they have 2 of them for me and maybe they can mail them out to me. I live 10 hours away from my dealership.

where are you gettin' the filters from? you don't have to get it through suzuki. the motor is the same one as the dirtbike's. get an aftermarket one for a drz.

The closest Suzuki dealership is 10 hours away. I'll be calling today about the oil filters and my axle. I could probably buy one over the internet somewhere. Maybe that would get here sooner.
