On my '86 LT230S, the front of the crank has a small crack in it that once the motor is hot, will mist oil all over the place. I saw the previous owner tried to JB Weld it bit it must not have worked. Anyone have any ideas or techniques for slowing or stopping it without replacing anything? My uncle is a mechanic for Ford and he gave me the following reccomendations:

-Loosen the oil filler cap to reduce pressure in the crank to hopefully reduce the rate of oil loss.

-JB Weld it again

-Use a heavier oil so it doesn't get quite as thin

-He also said there was some chemical you can put in with the oil that will stay in there so that if you ever did run out of oil, it would be used to preserve the motor and prevent it from seizing for a short period of time.

So does anyone else have any other recommendations?

Weld the crack.

I used JB weld to block a hole in the crank case of a 4 cylinder 750 street bike that was the size of a nickel. It worked perfect.

Maybe the guy put the jb on correctly, wrong mix ratio of hardener or did not clean the surface of grease well enough. I would give the JB another try.

Welding aluminum has come a long way in the last 10 yrs it's more expensive than JB weld but a lot stronger repair , if the crack is in an area that's easy to get to it would pay the $50.00 per hour for this repair ; there are even special welding rod's that you can use to weld almost any spot on an aluminum engine even the head's using only a small propane torch but they're very expensive !

I would just find a shop that weld's aluminum they charge you for an hour even if it take's one minute for the job , but it's well worth the cost for a permant repair ; i hope this help's you atvman if the quad runs good it would be well worth the $50.00 cost !...........
