Default Loc Tite for bolts

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to ATVs and I'm posting what may be a stupid question. I'm planning to tear down and rebuild my 1986 LTF230G for restoration. One thing that my uncle suggested was using blue loc tite on all the bolts. He said the vibration of a 4 wheeler and it being off-road, etc. could cause bolts to come out. Is he right? Is that what others do?

Thanks,
Danny

Yep, blue is if you don't want it to come off. Red is you don't want it to come off, ever.

Loctite #242 is the blue stuff (Loctite makes a zillion products, including many different thread lockers besides #242). It is fairly expensive. McMaster Carr (www.mcmaster.com) sells it.

I've also used the thread locker from Harbor Freight. It works, is removable, and is much, much less expensive.

If you are trying to lock down nuts then you could always replace the nuts with the nylon insert style lock nuts from your local hardware store.

There are three diff stages of locktite in this order lightest bonding to the strongest. It goes Green, Blue, Red. Only use green or blue if you plan in ever removing that bolt ever again!

So it sounds like you guys recommend using the blue loc tite for all the bolts on the 230. Thanks.

There are 20 kinds of Loctite you don't need and one that you do - blue 242 Medium Strength Threadlocker. Some stores have a medium strength blue Devcon that's about the same but may cost less.
