Truck Trend magazine just compared last years truck of the year to the new 2011 Ford Super Duty. Here is a link to the article, it is a pretty good read.

Well I will say this I am willing to bet this, Ford might actually have a diesel that is actually worth something this time. They have not had a good one since the 7.3 but with that said I am going to have to wait to see how this one turns out as it is coming from a company that has NEVER built a diesel engine before and a company as of late that has been having troubles with the own truck gas engines. I wish them the best because as of right now they are going to be up against some stiff competition from the Duramax and Cummings and I am not talking about the current edition of the Cummings neither!

Some of the interesting points in that article to me were ...

The Ford has significantly more HP and torque than the Dodge, but the Dodge still had faster acceleration than the Ford.

The Ford gets better fuel mileage than the Dodge, which is a first for Ford. Perhaps by being able to take care of emissions after the fact (by injecting urea into the exhaust) Ford was able to tune the engine better than by trying to reduce emissions primarily in the combustion process. Maybe there is one bright spot to urea injection, which will likely be in all of our futures.

The Ford felt smoother overall, and more refined than the Dodge, especially the transmission.

The top of the line Ford cost over $10,000 more than the top of the line Dodge. That makes for an extra $700 sales tax you pay on the Ford. That also means that for most people that have to finance their pickup truck purchase, they will be paying an extra $200 a month, each and every month, for five to six years, to own the Ford instead of the Dodge.

I could really use a new 3/4 or 1 ton turbo diesel but they are so far out of my price range it is not even funny. 60,000 dollars for a truck? If they were half that price I'm not sure I could even justify it. When I bought my truck new in 88 I paid 20k and thought it was astronomical. I can't imagine paying three times that.

I know a guy who recently spent 60k and bought two nice 3 bedroom homes, one on several acres in the country with outbuildings and another on a large lot in town.

I actully work for a cummins dealer and I have only seen one major problem with the isb which is in the dodge but the rest are minor issues but the rest unfortunely doesnt hold up all that way there is 3 guys I work with where they have had problems with transmission and front ends oine though the truck was 10 years old so i wont count that but the aftertreatment kinda is mess on the smaller trucks cause they dont have load on them to get them hot to do a regen

I own an 06 Ram with the 5.9 Cummins. I still think it is a much better motor than the current one. Numbers are meaningless. I only consider real road performance as my measuring stick. Maintnence is the key with diesels. If you are not going to take care of them religously, then get a gas motor. Aftermarket has a lot of upgraded trannys, and torque converters. I prefer ATS products...
