Default How much is your mpg reduced when towing?

My Jeep Wrangler will get 18 mpg when on the highway but when towing my 12 foot trailer with an ATV on it the mpg goes down to 14 mpg. Trailer and ATV weighs about 1500 pounds. How much do you loose in gas mileage when towing?

More than I'd like to. Regular hwy mileage is about 17-19 depending on my foot. When I hook up the toy hauler loaded with 3 quads, and all the stuff and people in the truck, it drops to about 9.

Lots of variables in this question. Depends on what you're towing, and what you're towing it with.

This gas engine truck with this trailer gets 9 mpg.

I'm asking more about what is the difference between the truck alone and the truck pulling the trailer. I'd like to hear what people that pull smaller trailers are experiencing. In my case 4 mpg for a not that large trailer seems like a lot.

You're only getting 4mpg or is that the difference?

Only losing 4 ain't bad at all, depending on what you're towing and using to tow.

I'm losing 4 from 18 to 14. Towing with a Jeep Wrangler unlimited towing trailer and ATV above.

Trying to remember what I got when I put two atv's on my 5x10 trailer and pulled them with my Ranger. Seems like the 2.3 motor still got about 19 mpg.

Now with the Titan, pulling about 9000lbs total I lose about 8. When I had the Silverado towing the same thing, it lost 10.

Towing with a Nissan Titan and one quad on the trailer doesn't make much, if any, difference for me because the quad is in the slipstream of the truck. When I have two quads side by side on the trailer it loses about 2 mpg over what it can do on the highway without a trailer. If I have three quads on the trailer it gets another 2 mpg less. So, I can go from 15-16 down to 13 or so with two quads or down to to about 11-12 with 3 quads. These are all utility quads.

2011 f250 oil burner, empty i get 17.6mpg highway, towing 12' landscape trailer with 3 quads 15mpg, towing 32' travel trailer weighing in at 9800lbs i get 12mpg.

for towing diesel is the way to go, however i pay more for fuel and the maintenance is more than twice what a gasser is.
