2004 grizzly gear ratio
 

I had a 2003 grizz and traded it for a 2004 grizz. I am disappointed because it seems to be quite a bit higher geared in both high and low ranges. If you need to turn the tires you have to put it in low. I have the stock tires on it, but i wanted bigger tires. Does anyone have any suggestions i.e. jets, clutch kits etc? I can't get any info from yamaha on the gearing.

The gearing shouldn't be any different than that of the 02-03! Take it back to the dealer, and don't leave untill you get some answers!!! If your not satisfied with their service, let them know, and find a Yamaha dealership that will! Get on the phone and call the next closest dealer, and ask them. That way it won't cost you anything but a phone call. You paid alot of money for that bike, and they SHOULD be working for YOU!!!

I have recently read my 04 grizz owner's manual, and it shows the transmission ratio. From what the owner's manual shows, the trans gearing is higher than the 03 in both high and low range. I talked to a couple of dealers and they told me they did not know, but they could rejet the carb to give it more low end power.

I don't get it! Why would they change? It would rob it of its power! Just doesn't make sense to me! I'll be checking that out before I buy another!

If you find anything out please let me know. Maybe they changed the gearing to solve the axle breaking problem. And another thing, what's up with the rattling front driveshaft? It sounds like the engine is knocking at high idle, but the 03 did that also.

I haven't found anything out about the gearing, but I'll take my bike out today, and see about the rattling that your talking about. I haven't really noticed that before. I do find that it seems you notice new sounds, for the first while you have something new. Whether its a car, truck or atv, but usely their just normal, and have always been there. But I will find out, and get back to you!

I went out for alittle ride, and I didn't hear anything coming from the front that was rattling. However, the back brake does rattle when going down a hill with ruts, which is normal. I wish I could be more help. I am kinda curious as to why you would buy a 04, when you had a 03?( Being its only a year old) I have a 03, and I plan on keeping it for sometime. Just curious?

The axle breaking problem on the '03 Grizzlys was because the axles where a smaller diameter. Yamaha cured the problem in '04 by going back to the '02 style and diameter axles.

That was the 02 that had that problem! I know because I checked out every review I could find before I bought one! I have have worked it hard, pulling logs that I didn't think it could pull as well as the deep mud! Never a problem!

Looks like you better check again. The 2003's snap axles all the time. So, in 2004 Yamaha went back to the 2002 design. Go to the Yamaha forum and ask or better yet do a search in the forums for this problem and you'll find out real quick its the 2003's with the problem. In 2003 Yamaha wanted to lighten the weight of the Grizz resulting in the smaller axles and CV-joints and then the snapping of the axles. Check your sources again its the 2003's.
