Skid Plates???
 

I am wanting to add skid plates on my Vinson, prefferably aluminum. I am not usually overly agressive, but sometimes I get overwhelmed by the kid in me. (Never happens to you, does it?)

Are there any pros or cons of any of the aftermarlet skid plates?

(Am also looking for the best "bang for my bucks.")

This seems weird, but on a utility that already has lots of underbelly protection, I prefer a plastic skid. Now before you laugh, remember that they make guns out of plastic these days!

Plastic is slippery and doesn't gaul and hang up on rocks like aluminum. Mostly, you can just slide right off. One advantage to aluninum however, is that it can be fabricated to wrap around the frame rails.

I totally agree. I have the ARMORDILLO skid plates they're tough as nails.
They are made out of a, high impact plastic that has alot of industrial uses.
Its quieter , slippery, and won't dent or get deformed.

The plastic used is called, UHMW. If you have a plastics supply company nearby
most carry it and you could order a piece and make one yourself it cuts like wood useing
a jigsaw.

I used it to cover the botttom of my drift boat and it just glides over rocks, great stuff.
I'm going to make one for my Outlander pretty soon.

polycarbonate is used for some skid plates. this is the same stuff used for bullet proof glass and safety glasses. a Canadian on another board told me that all big hardware stores carry "puck board" used for glass around hocky rinks to protect the fans. he buys a sheet ($50) and makes his own. if you wanna compare, take a hammer to the plastic, then the aluminum (at any temperature). you'll settle on the plastic.

but the aluminum is ok too, and there are lots of places to get 'em. just google "atv skid plate"

while you are looking, keep in mind you won't want bolts sticking down through the bottom of the skid plate to hang up on stuff.

hebco distributing (google that too) sells both lexan (polycarbonate) and aluminum skid plates.

Just for your info, puckboard is NOT the clear stuff thats used in hockey arenas, the clear stuff is either a plexiglass or safety glass ( tempered plate glass/laminate similar to safety glass used in automobiles) The puck board is the lower 'boards' surrounding the ice rink, its usually white but is available in different colours.

sorry, my bad. i googled "puck board" and some (most) of the results were about using the clear stuff for horse stalls and the like. i'd go with the "puck board" (the real stuff that you are talking about) but can't find it here. i'll probably have to order a skid plate.
