Power to move a boat?
 

Can a good size quad (say a Honda Rubicon) move a 3000 pound boat in and out of storage? The area where the boat will be moved is fairly level? What tongue weight can large quad usually handle?

My 06 foreman has a towing capacity of 850 lbs the rubicon should be the same. You would probably need a utv if you plan on towing that much around often.

If its a short distance and the boat is pretty well balanced(not to much weight on the tonge)you should be just fine, but you might find that you won"t be able to stop very well if you get going very fast.

I move my boats with my 800 Outlander, one weights over 3000lbs.

i pulled my uncles 28 baja cabin cruiser with my kingquad 300, so yeah you should be fine.'

idk about honda, there motors arent exactly high powered.

the only reson my quad did it was becasue of the damn low gearing. lol

I pull my 20' HURRICANE Deck Boat with tandom axle trailer at 4500lbs around my property and in the shop with a 400 2-stroke Polaris Scrambler. With the Kaw Prairie 650 I had it was easy, but the 500 Polaris Magnum 4x4 was a pain, the rear end lifed and lost traction, but I did use that quad to pull the boat in a parade with 25 kids and adults in the boat and 4 people on the 500 Polaris.......................

Any big bore other than a Honda, sorry man but Honda ain't the best at starting a heavy load

I have a 20' cuddy, it's right around your 3000 mark and the Grizz lugs it around no problems. I have to back the boat in to it's storage area up a hill and weave thru some trees, it's too tight to use the pickup so I just use the Grizz. It will pull a 7% incline all day long with the boat behind it, I wouldn't want to do any steeper for a long distance though for personal safty reasons. I found that any steeper than 7% the quad tends to shower your boat with rocks, as I was on a gravel road.

I know the neighbors are very impressed everytime I hook up the boat

I think that label with your towing capacity is the weight that your brakes can stop safely with you can tow many times more than that. My Vinson is rated for something like 960Lbs with a 90LB tongue weight my fathers Kodiak 450 is rated for something like 1000LBS and 30 something LBs tongue weight.
I tow our 18' fiberglass boat arround with ease (low range 4x4) with either of the bikes its less than 3000lbs though. I'm not sure the weight but I would guess 1000lbs boat, 200lbs engine, 200lbs gas& gear, ? trailer.

I tow my 16 ft Princecraft, with 90 hp Johnson on tilt trailer easy with my 05 KQ...
I have 60 ft hill with a 20% grade (STEEEEEEEP) (gravel) that it can climb with the a/m boat/motor/trailer in low range 4wd diff lock, from a stand still at the bottom, I did it cause I was stupid and I had to know.....
HOWEVER it can pull a lot harder than it can stop...coming down that hill was pretty scary....same set-up transmission wise and it accelerated me to about 20 kph which is way too fast on a slidy hill being pushed down by a boat, gotta be careful about brakes being pushed by a load like that or it'll jack knife you and your gonna get hurt, the bikes gonna get wrecked, and the boat messed up........so I'd say on level or nearly level ground you got the power to move nearly anything....just not the weight and traction to stop it.....fwiw
