We have had our 99 Recon for over 3.5 years and its just south of 400 hours and other than air filter and oil changes its never been back to the dealer.

I still enjoy riding it.

Its always the first one ready to go out the garage to make sure everything is ok on the back 40.

Default Belt VS Gears

Muddy, Raptor:

I have an old Fourtrax 300 2wd out in the shed that gets used pretty often. It is my semi-retired dad's machine. It currently has over 700 hours, and other than a battery & a few bolts working loose, has been 100% repair free. The front brakes are getting weak, and there is a little play in the steering, but it has been the best 'gas and go' ATV we have ever had on the place. I have about 500 hours on my Xplorer, and although I have never had a breakdown, I have had to replace about $200 worth of stuff on it. One reason I opted for the Polaris (besides the performance/price aspect) was the problems friends of mine have had with front CV boots on the 4wd machines (of all brands) and at the time (1999), the Polaris seemed best protected. The boot wasn't that expensive, it was the fear of ruining the joint that I worried about.

I still say not to be afraid of a belt IF you are willing to do the extra maintanence it requires. The performance gained is worth it in my mind.

However, for the non-wrencheads out there, the only thing my Honda needed was the clutch adjusted about once every 100 hours or so, and it is actually easier & quicker to do than change a tire.

Ride safe
