Riding in Michigan: Drummond Island?
Hey im in the lower Eastern side of Michigan. We trail ride up north a lot. We took a trip to Drummond Island and saw all the trails so now my dads planning and campling and riding trip up there during my upcoming spring break.
Has anyone rode up there on quads and if so how was it? We got two 400ex's and a Can AM outlander. Any info would be good, Thanks |
Back when the DNR only had paper maps I got one for each trail. Drummond Island was the only trail in the whole state recommended for experienced riders only. I just checked the interactive map and most of it is Trail and Route. Maybe it's not that bad, but I'd rather have 4WD than a sport quad just in case. I think you can ride your ATV onto the ferry instead of hauling it with a truck and trailer to the island. It would be cheaper that way and you wouldn't have to worry about finding a place to park on the island.
I rode Cranberry Lake Trail just west of De Tour Village and the island. It's a little trail and IIRC it's the one where there was a boulder about the size of my shed right next to the trail. Just one all by itself and none anywhere else. About 22 miles west of that trail I rode Bay City Lake Trail. It's a little trail too. Going north the entrance to the parking area is the last road on the left before the Kewadin Casino at Hessel. It's a small casino compared to most of them. I was a stone's throw away from the golf course on one part the trail and they had stumps piled up to keep people out. It would be easy to ride Cranberry Lake Trail and Bay City Lake Trail, and still have time to go to the casino the same day. https://midnr.maps.arcgis.com/apps/w...8110fdb4f7799d |

Looking at the maps it looks like a place I would like to try. Not sure how I would get my motor home over there to camp while riding. Looks very rustic from what I have read so far.

There are 4 campgrounds on the island. You should be able to take your motor home on the ferry.

Well I pull a trailer behind my motorhome so it needs to be a "big" ferry. Hate to see what that would cost? Sounds like fun though...
