Black River Falls Wisconsin
Hey Friends.
The wife and I are going up to BRF this weekend for some riding. Friends rode there last year and they said the northern areas (Clark County) are considerably better than the Jackson County trails. We're staying in BRF so we are pretty much situated right near the middle of the two. Has anyone ridden there lately? Any thoughts on particular trails or loops? |
So how was it? Always wanted to head up that way.

The town is extremely off road friendly but you can't ride in the town itself. Two big chain hotels are situated right on the trail head in town and there are gas stations and fast food places right there too.
We stayed in a little motel in BRF and it was okay. We were about an eighth of a mile from a trail head which was convenient. From the motel we were just a few minutes from WalMart and the other gas stations and food joints. The trails are mostly wide open and about twenty feet wide in spots. I prefer more technical riding but the wife unit really enjoyed the easy riding. There are some really rough spots that will jar the bars right out of your hands if you're not paying attention. These bad spots seem to appear randomly and can last for ten seconds up to a good minute. One trail south of BRF was closed due to a bridge washout. There are good places to stop for lunch and drinks and gas stations are clearly marked on the map too. We didn't make it too far north due to rain but I've been told they are narrower and more woodsy. We will be back next year to check out the rest of the trails. |
We stayed north of brf, in Merrilan, at Doc's bunkhouse.
It was great. Bartenders were a blast, and the cabins were very reasonable. We headed north the first day, up to Humbird and back. Trails were pretty fun, but like you say, a few dicey spots that come out of nowhere. Second day, headed to Hatfield area, and then down to the casino in brf. Got pretty dusty, and there were a ton of huge side by sides. I think it would be great riding up there, after some heavy rains. Found a few puddles, but still really dusty. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/atvconn...0a70ba17a7.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/atvconn...a375ba0fab.jpg |

Sounds like you had a great trip. Nice pics.
We have friends that stay at Doc's and we will probably check them out this summer. I've heard that there are some nice trails in the Crivitz area too. We have a group planning a trip to West Virginia for September next year. |
Crivitz is very nice also. Usually go there, up through Mountain, Townsend, and to the Casino in Carter or Waubeno I believe.
This year, the trails were closed up there due to had storm damage, so we went to the Merrilan area instead. Kind of similar trail systems. Sandy, gravel rail beds, and logging roads, but there is plenty of state land with nice trails. If you go there, go stop at the pipeline and play in the mud. |
Was trying to think of the name of the cabins we stayed at. Whispering pines.
Highly recommend. We stayed in the big one, used to be a restaurant, I believe. Slept 8 of us, just fine, maybe there was a blow up mattress, can't quite remember. Great people, rates were right on. Had a campfire on a Friday night, log pile was filled back up for us after riding on Saturday. Parked 3 trucks with 3 place trailers without a problem. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/atvconn...4b38c6ae1b.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/atvconn...44aa86cd01.jpg |
