Mod'd Warrior
I raced a bone stock warrior in the last GNCC event of the year at Crawfordsville and discovered I need more power. I raced in the sport class and finished mid pack(11 out of 19). I want to race in a couple of event in 2004, but I want the bike to be more competitive and still be able to race in the sport class(350 cc or less). What mods would the group recommend? Please help. I did put holeshots on the bike for the race. By the way, CC racing is a blast. Had a great time. The atmosphere of the event was great. Only bad thing is I am from Louisiana, we were camping and it was as cold as a well digger's ass in Indiana.

Racing a warrior eh? good for you....everyone is gonna tell you to get another quad. but you can be competitive in the trails with a warrior... this i know. with that said...this is what i'd do....
the warrior is underpowered for todays quads your running against...and after 20 min of hard riding...heat takes it's toll and it becomes even less competitive. this with the problems of handling. Suspension: first change i'd make, you have already addressed. tires: will dramatically better the handling of the warrior. ( i like the ITP XCT's...these have the angled side nobbies that help break them free for the powerslides.) next i would consider widening it's stance. I went the cheap route, using Raptor offset rims and (front) durablu wheel spacers. now that you have eliminated the rolly polly feel of the stock tires and are sitting (wider) like a champ. it's time to lose the shocks. the rear is not that bad...but if you want to increase travel, consider picking up a stock 01 Raptor shock (you can find them on ebay cheap). the Fronts are worthless/useless. 30 min of consistant riding heats them up and the performance fades quick. Works (dual rate) shocks are the most affordable and will be needed after widening the front. these changes alone will get you better times without even touching the engine yet. Steering: get rid of the stock bars! they're terrible and encourage sitting down. i use: Tag (cr high bend) with a Denton steering stabilizer. this will make you more comfortable in the Attack stance for longer periods of time and the stabilzer will slow down the action and keep you from becoming fatigued as quickly...also get rid of the e-brake and all the crap that accompanies it. if you roll the warrior and brake the electrical harness for the e-brake (which you don't even need) then your all done for the day...Game over. and while your removing that crap...toss the clutch perch. i replaced mine with the YZ426 perch. it's got a nice pull, rubber boot protects hinge from dust and dirt...and it looks stock. i don't mean to burst your bubble...but chances are your not going to be leading the pack. that said. hand guards are in order. any brand will do...but i used Powermadd. installation is the easiest i've found... and they can be changed to allow more air to flow through, if you like. Engine Mods (slight): since you want to remain in the 350 class, i'll talk about slight mods (i'll allow some of the other folks who have gone into the engine to expand on whats worked for them) i recommend WB (white Brothers) e-series (tunable discs) muffler. the head pipe is fine and isn't worth replacing but you may want to consider adding a tourque stuffer to it (alba) for more low end grunt. pro-design pro-flo filter with Motoforce airbox lid. the lid is clear and lets you inspect the filter by just removing the seat and has two nice size intake vents for better breathing. its a nice way of letting the warrior breath yet still allow some protection from mud and water. instead of rejetting i added a Dial-a-jet (thunder products). this increases throttle reponse and lets you adlust your jetting in less than 2 min. click! click! and your done. these changes should give you gains across the board but will be more noticeable on the low to mid ranges. it will also increase your running tempt slightly and this normaly isn't a problem for todays liquid cooled quads but once again the warrior is handicapped in this area. even if you just run stock i'm sure your noticing shifting becomes more difficult the longer you've been riding a warrior. the tranny and engine share the same oil and when it heats up (and on an aircooled quad this happens quick) performnace fades (miss shifts). the fix for this is FST (four stroke techs) oil cooler. this will extend your performance throughout the race and is the most expensive mod mentioned here. Protection: I like the DG skids for the engine and the a-arms and PRM for the swingarm (it has a nice piece that protects the linkage). another simple add on is a WB front bumper. nice hand holds and protection in the center to keep the mudd off the cooling fins on the engine one last item i really like for the warrior...Nacs footpeg extenders. these things are probably the cheapest mod mention but when you use them properly, they can dramiticaly increase your handling. (seriously) they assist like nothing else in whipping that pig around. Man...i think i covered everything. i've done all this except for the extended oil reservoir from FST. i tried to get as much performance gains as possible for as cheap as possible. i think i've accomplished that. good luck and feel free to ask me anything. i've got pics of everything mentioned and have one pic of my warrior in "mypics". The one advantage you will have over the other rides...is reliability. the warrior is bullet proof. and i don't think anyone would dispute this. |

I built a motor for top end with porting, a 36mm flat slide, .450 cam, 10.25:1 piston etc... etc.... Then I rode a warrior that was built more for torque. Pipe, 10.25:1 piston, filter, etc... and the main difference was mine had massive low end and could be ridden like a harely. I will admit if you started lugging it, it would deccelerate and stall but as long as the RPMS were a bit higher than idle it had big power. Top end? it had alot more but not neccesarily in the same place, it seemed to have alot more higher up. One interesting thing though, it had even more bottom end with the stock carb and also instant throttle response. The flatslide seemed to take a lil bit from response and a little bit from bottom end and add that too the top.
