Hey....I'm new to hill climbing and I want to try it out this summer. My friends and even strangers have talked me into it, so I need some advice.

I know enough to lean uphill, but what about gearing, suspension, tire types, etc? All I know is its slippery the first half, then like ice the second half.....

My weapon of choice will be my 87 LT500, but I will make different changes to it in hopes of not tumbling backwards. If I can do well and really like this hillshooting stuff, I'll probably turn it into a dedicated hill climber.

Sand Mt., NV has a King of the Hill competition on Memorial Day Weekend.

Labor Day Weekend is DS Days (all 4-strokes welcome.) This will be the place to be to see who has the fastest 4-stroke. 2-strokes are welcome but, I think people at Labor Day are more interested in seeing the fastest 4-stroke.

 

get a longer swingarm, stay around a 20'' tire in the rear, you don't want too big of a tire for climbing hills, you going to need the most bottom end that you can get so I would suggest adjusting your gearing accordingly, go down in te front or up in the back.

 

Like they have said it depends on what you are climbing? Are you getting into the AMA sanctioned hill climbs? If so what hill are you going to be climbing? Also take this from me as well.... A 500ft hill can take an ATV and turn it into spare parts! [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

Climbs are a blast, but just be careful and remember when a 300-400lb quad gets one roll comming off a hill you best just get out of the way at that point gravity and physics are on its side!

 

Its kinda like the hill in Heuvos III(?).....It's in one of those older videos. No sand or anything....So far I'm running 21" Mudsharks on ITP .190's in the back, and I think I might get some heavier steel wheels for the front. If I can do anything other then wreck my quad I heard there's a big hillclimb in Mass somewhere, but I don't know if its sanctioned or not. The one I want to try first isn't, though.

Does anyone know of any good websites with quads set-up for this?

Good luck with the climbs. But keep in mind that a large hill can do more than simply "wreck" your quad. I ended up replacing frame, rims, a-arms, swing arm, chain, bumper, grab bar, plastics, and several smaller items. That is a little more then a wreck! LOL

Bartlett... I hadn't heard that one before but it is fairly acurate I had around 3G in my quad fixing it and it rolled about 27 times (that was the best we could count using slow mo on the video, it got hard to figure out how many times it rolled because it was in a tight barrel roll).
