its coming time 2 change the oil in my 97 warrior, what kind of oil does anyone suggest.....and how much oil does the atv require?

Any kind of 10w40...I used the ATV 10w40 stuff for a while...too costy...now i just use regular sae 10w40....stock no oil cooler or anything...it takes 2 quarts..if you are changing the oil filter or cleaning it, which i would recommend, then u need around 2.5 quarts.

it wont hurt to use car motor oil?
how can i clean the oil filter instead of buying a new 1?

Yes, you can use car oil, I wouldn't recommend using synthetic, but you can if you desire.

To clean the oil filter, Just spray some brake cleaner on it and let it sit and dry.

I am far from an expert but if you decide to use automotive oil, I recommend changing it a little more often. ATV's use their oil differently than cars as it also lube the tranny. The tranny gears can shear the polymers of an auto oil more easily than a motorcycle oil thus breaking it down (lost viscosity) more quickly. Also have heard some stories of clutch slipage with full synthetics as it also baths the clutch plates. As it's only a few quarts to change, I recommend a conventional motorcycle oil.

When i had my starter clutch go out i ask the mechanic what type to use and he told me to use strictly yamalube because it has certain things in it that lubricate stuff such as the starter clutch and said that over time it could have been a cause to the starter clutch goin out. I also know hes not saying this to make more money by selling it bc he doesnt sell the oil himself. So I just use yamalube its cheap compared to the 243$ starter clutch

Will low oil, or bad oil (ain't changed it in a while) cause it to be hard to shift?

I use Amsoil synthetic 4-stroke oil in all my quads. They run cooler, shift smoother, and last longer. No hype just fact!
