mounting k+n's directly to fcr's?

i was wondering if anyone has tried this? i am wanting to get an adaptor plate like sixsixt's setup (which he is probably sold out of)...but was wondering if you could just mount the filters directly?

craycraft runs a foam filter that mounts directly to the back of the carbs...
