The higher the octane a fuel is, the harder it is to ignite. When you have a high HP car, the cylinder temp is hot enough to ignite fuel without the spark, so know the piston has to fight its way to the top of the stroke aganist the expanding combustion gases. This is refered to as a knock, or detonation. Running a higher octane means the fuel will not ignite just from heat, and makes engine feel super sexxy.J/k
