i just bought a kodia 400 air cooled and when going for a half hour ride i could feel alot of heat coming onto my legs from the engine and i noticed the fan in the front of the machine wasnt on. on this machine is the fan suppose to be on all the time or is it controlled by a thermostat and if so where is that. anybody out there have any ideas?

Best thing to do is disconnect the wiring to the blower.
Put a voltage right to the blower to see if it works.
If it does then Naturally its not the blower.
The put a volt meter tester to the lead wires that went to the blower.
See if you have DC VOLTAGE THERE, with the key on.
If yes then the blower should work if no then there is either a thermast connection or a blow fuse or bad wiring or one of the above is malfunctioning.
A volt meter tester is worth its weight in gold ten fold.

The next step is to get a wiring schematic and trace the wires.

 

Forgot to mention that there should be a termo unit on the left side of the engine when siting on the seat. You can trace the wires from there to the blower etc. I know this is an old post but didnt see any answers there for you.

 

thanks for the reply, all i did was unplug the thermostat and took a lighter to it for a while, i was actaully surprised how long it took with the lighter to it to start the fan i guess it needs to get really really hot before it turns on...on that note is there any way to get it to turn itself on at a lower temperature then it is already set at?

I'm new at this ATV stuff but engines are engines for the most part.
Maybe the thermo is bad, to begin with all things do die.
Pull the thermo out and clean it good with carb cleaner and try it again
with the lighter.
Does your rig have a heat light indicater on it and if yes does the light come on when you
put the lighter to it.
Another thing you can do is put a termo gauge in line and see what temp the fan turns on at.
Seems like a lot of work but better then burning your engine up from over heating.
What year is your kodiak.
