transfer gear oil

i recently bought a 99 kodiak 400 when i was changing the fliud the transfer gear oil would overflow when i opened the filler cap and it was grey in color and really think. i changed it all as well as all the other oils. took it for a drive for a fews hours came back checked the gear oil again and it was over filled and had already turned more grey then what i had put in. i just put in the reguler atv motor oil as the book calls for. i checked the carb before i changed the fluid and the needle wasn't sticking and the float valve also wasn't sticking so i can't getting gas into the gear oil. had this happened to anybody else.... please help!

Hummm on my 2005 they have specific gear oil to use which is sold at Yamaha dealers. And it says it should just be level with the top of the opening to fill it. Not sure why yours is overfilling after you ride it. Doesn't seem right to me. As for it turning grey either isn't the correct stuff or it probable needs flushed a few times. Anyone else have any input?

You said it was over filled. The oil level will be a tad bit higher when warm and the tiny air bubbles in oil will raise the level a tiny bit. When you remove the fill plug is there pressure in the gear case? If there is a slight hiss or the plug pops out when its unthreaded. check your venting. If its plugged the moisture in the gear case will not vent out and cause water to start to collect and contaminate the oil. Simple checks and cost nothing!!!Hope it helps.
