New to ATV's, break in period
 

Hello:

I'm new to the ATV world, I just purchased a new '05 Grizzly, blue in color and had to get over zealous and order some new ITP XTR's and C series, type 7, 14". The wheels have not come in yet.

I took ownership on Wednesday, 8/31/05. I live in the country here in Illinois and immediatley took my new Grizz out for a spin. I did so Thursday evening and some Friday was well. My brother is up visiting from Florida, he owns a Polaris ATP 500. I let him take it out for a ride and as I'm standing outside talking with my niece, he disappears. Next thing I know he pulls up in my lane, he'd taken the Grizz out on the road, not really a country road, but an asphalt road that runs east and west in front of my house. He told me that he had just hit 65 mph and thought it would go faster. I about came unglued. I had not had it up past 22 mph, it only had about 3 miles on it. Today I really scolded him for his act and I've been stessed out, little sleep last night, that he didn't ask me if he could open it up and that he may have damaged the motor going that fast with only little milage on the machine.

I believe he got her up to 65 mph and then backed it off, then returned home, he only went about .5 mile, gone about 3 minutes.

Do any of you believe the engine could be damaged?

As long as the engine was completely warmed up, givin her heck isn't going to hurt it. Further testimony to the mototune method-the owners manual for my Dodge Ram specifies to use "full throttle acceleration" within legal limits of course[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img] Rest easy young grasshoppa- your Grizz is just fine, and would in fact benefit from further such treatment.

Thanks everone for the posts thus far. I feel a bit foolish, normally I'm very careful with my equipment, guns, bows, road bicycles, truck, and wanted to carry this philosophy over to my new ATV. I guess I can be careful, but still follow the mototune method.

I've never really had a good, thorough understanding of the workings of engines, this might have prevented my spat with my older brother.

Hey, no problemo. The way you were thinking is what has been taught to the general public for, oh, just about ever. The majority still go with the easy break-in method. The reality of it is that a modern engine from reputable manufacturers should give years of good service regardless of how it was broken in.
