What kind of riding are you going to be doing? Dunes, sand dragging I would run with the DS or Raptor. Trails, Raptor or 450R. Track, either one of the new 450's. For a good all around bike I would go with a Raptor or the 450R. Just my .02 cents.

Well during the winter i race flat track indoors and during the summer we dragrace and ride dunes. i know the yfz does really well on the flat track. im keeping my warrior i have it set up for flattrack and i just have way to much money in it. and i know if i can make a warrior competive on the flattrack i know i can make a tall and heavy ds do the same. lol i just wanted to know the pros and cons of both.

There are going to be ALOT of pro's and con's about both. Here are some of the more important ones to me:

YFZ Good... probablly the fastest machines stock, great suspension, lightweight, and great on any terrain.

Bad... Hard seat and stiff throtle.

I've never ridden a DS so I don't know much about them, I've only raced them. One thing I do not like about them is the weight though.

The ds 650 is tippy as hell, and really not that fast. The yfz is a pretty good bike, but if i were you i would get a banshee

Well I will agree that the DS is a heavy SOB and definatly isn't the best track bike but the engine has lots and lots of potential and is far from being slow. If your gonna be running flat tracks and riding dunes I would stick with one of the 450's.

Default YFZ450 vs DS650

DriverDoyle,
I have owned three DS650s and two YFZ 450s. The YFZ is more fun to ride and has lots better handling in the turns and over the jumps than the DS650 does. The DS is better at speeds over 50 mph. Power wise they are fairly equal after a pipe and jetting, with the DS having more power down low, and the YFZ having more on top. If one is tuned better, or has better tires than the other, it is the one that is going to win. The DS is easier to get jetted perfectly than the YFZ is.

The stiff thumb throttle has been fixed on the '06 YFZ, and can be fixed on the '04-'05 YFZs with a $30 extended throttle lever from JL ATV, and removing the return spring from the throttle housing (the return spring in the carb is plenty strong).

The stiff seat on the '04 YFZ was partially softened in '05, and fixed for good in '06. This is a non-issue if you ask me though, because any YFZ seat is nice and soft compared to a motocross bikes seat.

Suspension of the '04 YFZs was STIFF, but has been improved each year since then. Ohlins fixed any suspension issues I had with my last DS 650, and the same goes for my YFZ .

The DS650s design is starting to get a bit dated, and it is time for Bombardier to do a major update (there was a minor update in 2004)

DesertViper.
