Newby? 96 Wolverine won't idle

Hey all new 2 forum

I just bought a 96 Wolverine that won't idle unless the choke is the half out . It also seems to take a long time to warm up. The guy i got it from said it had been sitting a couple of months and that he had changed the gas. I did also find that the air filter is loose in the housing. I plan cleaning the carb but would to play with my new toy some first.

Here's what I need help with.
are there any simple adjustment on the carb to fix choke problem?
where is the oil filter? Is it on the lower right side of the motor by the brake lever?
should I change the front diff. fluid? what kind of fluid?
what kind of oil should I use?
Is there anything that I need to do or anything I need to look for?

Thanks for any Info or Help

Welcome to the forum

Ya start with cleaning the carb, clean air filter (and fix loose issue dont want it sucking in air around it), put in a new plug. This will most likely fix your issue.

I think the motor is the same as my warrior so oil filter is on left side by the shifter.

I use yamalube oil, but there are alot of good oil just be careful of car oils the detergents they use arent good on ATV's

ok, first I would DEFINITELY NOT ride until you get the carb issue fixed. It sounds like it's too lean, and you have to use the choke to richen it up, problem is that if you ride it you could blow the engine by running it lean.

Clean the carb or better yet get a rebuild kit, make sure the floats are ok and make sure the adjustment is right,
make sure there are no rips in the intake boot between the carb and the engine. Drain all the old gas and pour in fresh gas, pull the fuel line off the carb and make sure you have good flow. Make sure the gas cap vent is open also. Same with the carb vent tubes.

I dont own one of those machines, so i dont know about the oil filter. As for what type of oil, Make sure you buy Motorcycle type oil that is safe for wet clutches Meeting JASO MA certification. I think 10w40 weight is ok, but i dont know for sure on that machine. The best thing to do would be to buy a manual first and look in there for all your maintanance concerns.

I have a 96 that had the same problem, it turned out to be just dirt and a plugged jet.
If you have no experience with the bike carb's just find on the net a big blowup of your carb
lay everything out on a clean workbench on top of a towel keeps things from flying off?
They are pretty simple as far as a carb kit all you need is a couple orings, unless you have deeper problems!
Good luck

wolverine oil filter is on the right next to the brake lever where the two nozzels come out going to and from the external oil cooler mounted behind the front bumper. for Oil check the manual for the weight i forget off hand but any good motorcycle oil will work. just make sure whatever oil it is that its set for wet clutch setups. dont use regular motor oil and especially synthetic car motor oil as your clutch will slip. synthetic or regular is fine as long as its motorcycle oil (for a wet clutch design) on these bikes the tranny uses the motor oil its not seperate which is different from a car setup.

I use Amsol ful synthetic motorcycle oil and I love it. Yamalube is good too.

It's my understanding that the moter is the same as the kodiak, but it sounds like the carb is dirty, like the others say a carb clean and a new plug should fix it! check and see were the oil cooler lines go into the engine for the oil filter, or check your owners manuel.

Not the same as the Kodiak; he said 96 not 06. Guess we have to watch for that now.
