MOTO 4 Compression Release

What purpose is the compression release on a Moto 4? Is it used in starting the engine. This old atv is hard to start. It has good compression, and good spark, but I don't if the carb starter choke is working correctly. I recently bought this machine and cannot find an owners manual for it. If you know anything about the compression release please reply.

Compression release is mostly for pull starting I think. Which moto 4 is it? there's a couple different ones

Recon, that is exactly what the compression release is for.

the compression release makes it easier to pull over, most kick start bikes have these usually the electric start bikes have them come on automaticly

Thanks guys for the replys. I don't know which MOTO 4 this is, I have not found the model and serial numbers yet. This model does not have a pull starter and the compression release is manual. I did some rewiring on it today and it starts better, I think the wiring was causing the starter to turn too slow. I have a lot more to check on it and I probably will be back with more questions.

Does it have a kick starter? I never saw a manual compression release on a quad with only electric start. Yamaha makes it difficult to find model numbers sometimes, but you could start by looking around the base of the cylinder for the cc's. It should be stamped in there somewhere.

No it does not have a kick start or pull start, only electric start. I found info on the atv today. It is a MOTO 4, YFM 225 S , It is 225 cc, 1986 year. But I still don't know how the compression release would be used with electric start. I will call a Yamaha dealer tomorrow and see if they know. I'll bet they don't.

The pull start is behind the crankcase cover, called the starter pulley cover There are 6 or 7 allen screws holding it on. Maybe your lucky. It came with a key that was in a kit that is under the seat. On the left side of the seat there is a release lever to removet he seat. Tilt back up first then slide seat toward back. There should be a pouch with a key in it. It is used for emergency starting. I believe it came with a pull rope also.
It's a durable machine. I am having trouble starting at the moment myself. Can't figure it out. Starts sometimes and then not others. What's up with that?
