where's the TDC/timing mark access cover for Wolverine?
 

I'm going to be checking/adjusting valves on a friends Wolverine. I think it's a 2001, but i don't think the year matters for this. I've done a search in this forum and already found the specs. What I'm wondering is where/what do you remove to see that the engine is at TDC, with "T" mark lined up? ( I know to do adjustment on compression stroke, where rocker arms have a tiny bit of play).

The timing marks are on the left side cover, there is a large slotted round cover on the side,that is access to the bolt you turn the motor with, the timing marks are under the smaller slotted cap just above it. Always a good idea to take off the cam sprocket cover and make sure when you are at TDC, the cam timing marks line up too.

You won't need any gaskets. The cam sprocket cover is on the left side, at the top of the motor. It's a round cover, held by allen bolts. Personally, I never remove it for valve adjustment, as you say, when the rockers are "free", you are on the comp stroke.

Another way to check for comp stroke is to remove the spark plug, and look in with a small flashlight--you should see the piston high in the cylinder.

hmmm, thot i already posted this tidbit... but i don't see it.

I put a screwdriver with a long-enuf handle in the Spark plug hole. then when it comes out the farthest (from piston pushing it), I know I'm at TDC. only do this on hard to see TDC marks, or ones that don't seem to wanna line up. works well.
