Default Im Lost

Man i have been reading so much on hot cam s1 and s2, now i cant decide. I like trail riding and i also like drag racing. I have heard that the s2 is not really the cam of choice for trails. And s1 is not the best for drag racing. I am going to be getting a 686 kit with 11:1 piston, so i dont know what to do. I am kind of leaning on the s1 cam.

go for the s2, the raptor has PLENTY of bottom/mid range power. You'll love the way the top end pulls the handle bars

I am set up similar to cali and I agree with him. I too thought I wanted to go S1 but, S2 is the way to go. The top end pickup is very NICE!!! The bottom end on the rappy has never been the question so enhancing it doesn't make a lot of sense, especially if you are going to go 11:1 and 686. I didn't go with the bore though, I wanted to leave room for that in a future rebuild. The S2 snd 11:1 will really change the ride, remember you have to go with upgraded valve springs with the S2.

When you put the 11:1 Piston in can you still run regular 91 octane pump gas in it? Or do you have to buy race fuel?

You can run 91 fuel with 11:1 and stage 2 no problem. I did for a year with no problems.

There is no disadvantage to a stage 2 at all. You get increased power thru the whole range. The only reason there is even a stage 1 cam is because the stock Raptor valve springs are worthless...even with a stock cam. Hot cams made the stage 1 so you could add a cam without the trouble of changing the springs. The stage 1 doesn't do much for you because its limited by the springs.

Don't waste your time and money with the stage 1.

I appreatiate you guys helping me out. I decided to go with the s2 and the 686 kit. I am getting my head ported as we speak so hopefully i will see a nice improvement. I have asked in another thread about changing my connecting rod but no one seems to have an answer. Do you guys think its a good idea to change it out since the stock is crap, and i have the motor apart?

I agree with master, a lot bigger gains with the stage 2 (i have tried both) and the bottom end loss was not noticable with the stage 2. Save your pennys and change the rod, port & polish while the head is off getting the springs, replace valves with stainless, and fit a stage 2 and you will be impressed Gav

Your rod will break within a year if you don't change it. It can't take the higher RPMs you will get with a stage 2. You can get a wiseco crank assy with a hot rod for $250. A little more if you go with a stroker.

Also, who ports your head makes a big difference on how much power you will make. I had mine ported by a non-Raptor specialist the first time. The gain was not impressive. Then I had Craycraft re-do it. It was a kick in the butt power gain! It went from 175 main jets to 200.
