Blaster clutch headaches

Hi all, I'm brand new to the forum. I'm putting a blaster motor back together for a guy [which was in pieces in a bucket] and when it comes to the clutch I'm a little puzzled.
Going by the service manual, I put two washers on, the basket , followed by a splined spacer, then the center hub and the washer and nut. The manual tells me torque the nut to 58 ft lbs, but when I start to tighten the nut I find that it is locking the basket and hub together- they don't spin freely of each other. I've taken them apart a dozen times and put it back together per the manual but the same thing happens. am I missing something?

In my clymer manual the the two washers go on the shaft first then the basket then the splined spacer then the center hub then the lock washer and nut. I had my blaster apart two years ago and did it by the book. I can't think of any thing your missing. I don't know if I helped any.

Yeah, thats how I put it together. When you put yours together did you notice if the basket and hub still moved freely of each other? To me it seems if I torqued the nut to spec, I won't get any clutch disengagement.

They don't move freely because the clutch is engaged until the lever is pulled. You don't have the cover on, so you obviously can't be pulling the lever to disengage the clutch. Finish putting everything back together, and if it doesn't work right then you can start troubleshooting. If you followed the instructions you'll be fine.

Alright, I'll put it together tomorrow morning. Cross my fingers that it works. I've had this motor over a month. First it waiting on parts, then I noticed the counterballancer chewed a hole into the crankcase and had to get the cases welded
