This question could not be answered by any Yamaha tech I have spoke to..
While riding my 2001 660 Raptor at cruising speed , the motor cuts off, at the same time the reverse light comes on, the motor recovers and then light goes off. this is then repeated. There is no explained reason why. It has the same symptom as if you hit the cut off switch for 3-5 seconds and then turned it back on. No backfire. This happens towards the end of a short riding day. It so far has always recovered to get me back to camp but I am sure one day it may not. An additional symptom is it sputters, like the pkng brake kill switch is on ( which as been removed), when I am climbing hills. Carbs were serviced by Yamaha.

i have a 2004 660. one day i was ridding mine in the mountians. the motor starting turning off and having loss of power for no reason. then it cut out and the reverse light came on. at first i thought it was a bad connection with my CDI box. then about 10 minutes later it did it again. the motor died and reverse light came on. i finally descoved the wire connected to my reverse switch/sensor was not making good contact. it had some moisture/dirt in it. after cleaning it out, it ran great. i hope this helps ya.

You info gives me a place to start. Your symptoms sound si,ilar to mine. Whereabouts is the reverse switch /sensor on the quad? Is it the one that looks like the key on the rt front fender?

 

Your reverse switch connector is loose. THe reverse switch (a switch that senses when the tranny is IN reverse, not the reverse lever on your fender) is just below the output sprocket on the left side of the engine.

 

quadmaniac is right. my connector it black with a 90 degree bend. pull it off and blow it out with compressed air and clean off the connector. i hope this fixes your 660, good luck!

 

he was right because my bike was doing the same thing now it runs perfect but you will need to do this everytime it happens the best advice i can give you is to run a wire from the connecter to your battery it will be the green an white one if u have a 01 if its an 03 it could be red or orange if u have anymore question email me @ job.4.a.cowboy@live.com im always willing to help a fellow rider

 

My son's was doing that and I traced it to the wires going to the reverse switch. they had rubbed against the bottom of the motor and were shorting out.
