why does every jet kit say they are for 93 and up. can i buy one of these kits and will it work for a 89?

and i was trying to find out are they hard to put in? someone told me that if u do it rong you can loss your engine??.

The difference between the older carbs and new ones is the needle, and really you don't need the needle that comes with the kit. Actually you don't need anything in the kit, you're much better off just going to the dealer and getting a handful of individual jets. The dynojet kit really offers no advantage, you just spend $60 when you really need to spend less than $10.

And there's really not much involved with rejetting if you take your time and follow instructions from somebody that knows what you're doing. The only way you could really mess up your engine is if you installed a jet that is too lean, and carelessly ran it that way without doing some plug chops to make sure that it isn't too lean. Whenever you mess with a carburetor you need to check the color of the insulator on the spark plug for color. A nice tan or light brown color is what you're looking for, your ratio is right where it needs to be. If it's white you need to richen it in the throttle range you did the plug chop at, and if it's dark or black you need to lean it out. Running too rich won't hurt the engine like running it too lean will, but it robs power and builds up carbon deposits.
