Torque x RPMs = Horsepower
CC's can give you a "rough" estimate of torque on a NA 4 stroke, but there are factors can sway the number up or down some. Many factors determine the RPM range of an engine and that can vary greatly. There are some very small model (radio controlled car) engines that spin 30,000 RPMs that claim 1 HP and you can compare that to a 1 hp "Briggs" style engine and you get the idea that CC's alone can not be used to determine HP. |

Horsepower without torque is almost useless.
So many factors are involved that it is nearly impossible to use displacement to determine horsepower. You have to consider the engine design (stroke vs bore), the efficiency of the chamber to get air/fuel (2,3,4 & 5 valve engines), combustion chamber design, ignition timing and fuel type. Even items like force feeding with turbos to increase the air/fuel charge in the chamber will change everything. One thing you can be sure of is that with everything equal in design, more displacement will produce more power. |
