2001 Raptor carb issues

My pals 2001 Raptor runs like crap. It sat for a long time (with fuel stabilizer in it) and now it will not run anywhere off full to 3/4 choke. Originally he brought it over because he sheared off all the one way starter gear bolts (for the second time).

I replaced all the bolts reassembled the machine and tried to run it. He stated it ran right before he broke it and brought it over. Initially it wouldn't even start. I got it to run on full choke only after spraying carb cleaner into the carbs, draining the gas and refilling with fresh gas and fuel system cleaner so it ran somewhat better.

Anyway I pulled the carbs off, cleaned them out by pulling everything off and spraying carb cleaner and air into all the holes. I did not see any crud or dirt.

I reassembled the whole thing and it did start and run off idle a little. I was actually able to run it up and down the street but it will not idle and it backfires.

One thing I did notice was the carb slides were jumping up and down in their bores while I had it running. I held them steady with my hand and it seemed to run a bit better. The needle and seat seem Ok too.

Short of buying carb kits does anyone have any suggestions? I want to avoid buying carb kits and have it do the same thing.

Thanks, Nuuch

You need to remove the main jets and blow them out with compressed air or clean them some other way. It doesn't take much to gum them up, and if your pal didn't run the engine for a few minutes after pouring in the fuel stabilizer, then the carbs set there with old fuel in them the whole time.

He said he ran the bike for a bit before shutting it off. I took the carbs and unscrerwed all the jets, took out the needle valve and pretty much disassembled anything I could. I blew everything out with air and sprayed carb cleaner all through it.

I don't know. Maybe I missed some crud.

Oh, OK. You may need to soak them for 24 hours in some parts cleaner. Sounds like it is definately a carb problem, though.

its a long shot but unplug the parking brake sensor. but im not sure if this effects how the bike idles. i know it effects it when throttle is applied.

I had the same problem with my 02 turned out to be the main jet plugged up didnt get it with first cleaning, the parking brake sensor only effects when throttle is pressed dont worry about that

i would suggest you get your carbs ultrasonically cleaned its the only way you know they are thoroughly cleaned, also check the needles as any wear would upset the running also check the needle slides for wear ,check your float levels and carb manifolds for cracks .these are the most common things to make them run bad
