Default FAS Trouble Shooting

Hello,

A friend gave me his no crank Yamaha Kodiak Ultramatic after buying a new ATV.

I’m trying to find a manual on it so I can trouble shoot it.

Unit information per FAXVIN:

Vin #: JY4AJ03Y41C011035

2001 Yamaha YFM400

Trim level: FAS

I have found several manuals online,

YFM400FAR

YFM400FW

YFM400FWAM

YFM400WAMC

But unable to find an FAS manual, one manual list a trouble shooting of all switches and if all good replace the CDI module. The other manual stops after last switch test with no mention of replacing the CDI module.

So what does the FAS designation mean? Any ideas where to get an FAS Service Manual or do I use the FAR manual?

Thank you!

Fairly strange manual if it only tells you to test switches as the "power coil" and "crankshaft position sensor" are likely candidates for giving ignition trouble. It also seems odd to put out more than one manual for the whole YFM400 ultramatic family up to the change of shape, in fact I have the 350 Bruin manual and it covers the 400FAR as well, incidentally the Bruin part is designated "for 350FAS". I suspect Yamaha changed a bike slightly and used a different letter for designation so FAR would be the same as FAS except for a mod, odd though as the 400FAS is an 04 model according to Partzilla, sure you haven't got that VIN wrong?

@merryman

Thank you for replying to my post.

I verified the Vin # and it is correct.

I haven’t checked the ignition as I was trying to get it where it will crank with the starter. I’ll check to see if it starts with the pull rope then try to diagnose the starter circuit.

My son is coming over in a few days with a multi meter so I’ll run thru the test in the FAN Manual and go from there since I can’t find a FAS Manual online.

Going to pick up a few cans of contact cleaner and go thru all connections in the wire harness and will report back as I can.

Thank you again!

Afraid your original post was misleading. To me, and apparently to you, to crank means to turn over, however to lots of people it means to run, and your mention of changing the CDI led me to believe you were in this camp. I had forgotten Yamaha's crazy idea of wiring the starter lock-out through the CDI. I think you would be best to use the FAR wiring diagrams, as it is several modifications later than an FAN.
