Default Spring in the U-joints

I have a 98 big bear and believe it has a 94 engine since it has the sub transmission that powers the front and rear diff, I ran into a driveshaft shortage to the front diff, it fits in the couplers but some splines are showing maybe 3/8ths of a inch on one side and vice versa if i take my hand and push/shift it towards the other coupler, I'm reading in the owners manual there's suppose to be a spring that also goes into the coupler with the splines, is it because I do not have this that it is creating the "shortage"?

Default

there should be a spring that slide over the drive shaft (front dif side) and pushes the drive shaft towards the yoke where it connects to the engine. When you remove that it adds a ton of slop and the shaft can come out.
