YFZ450 won't start---doesn't crank, oil light comes on
I just got a 2005 YFZ 450 and it ran great for 2 rides. Then today i go to start it up. i turn the key and the neutral light comes on and i hit the starter button and nothing. only the oil light comes on when i hold the button in. Motor doesnt crank or click. someone please give me some tips as to what the problem is
Is it in Neutral?
yes, i even held in the clutch and tried changing gears and it wont come out of neutral and the light just stays on. i cant do anything to make it crank by itself. it is below freezing, so i wasnt sure if this may have been a cause
Check to make sure the battery is fully charged.
Make sure the kill switch is 'off' Make sure it is in nuetral |
battery is charged--it wont even do anything while its hooked up to the charger
kill switch is in 'run' position in neutral--i can roll it the only other thing i can think of is frozen or bad wiring. i did check some connections though and it seemed fine. |
Can you push start it? If your wheels lock up when you let go of the clutch, you might have a seized motor.
yes, i got it push started. i took it to my friend who works on them and it turns out yamaha is known for having "a little red wire" that usually goes bad. im guessing its the starter button relay. he replaced it and now it runs perfect
spray some wd40 or some kind of cleaner in the key ignition slot, same thing happened to me
Check the fuses on the starter relay. one is live and one is a spare so if you have a blown one they can be swapped. I had the wiring harness wear through and short out on the frame that caused a similar problem on my '05. The area that wore through was close to one of the sensors on the radiator.

Same problem here
Which wire did you replace and where is located?
