1999 big bear350 4x4 Source coil?

Default 1999 big bear350 4x4 Source coil?
I'm working on the above for a friend and checked the trigger coil and found it to be open circuit. I pulled the cover and checked the wiring and it was good so I replaced the coil. Just what does the source coil do?
