Big bear spark problem
Hip, new to this forum...need help with my big bear 350 1991 atv. No spark. Have had stator tested, they said OK. Have replaced cdi with a working used cdi. Have checked all connections. New charged battery, changed coil with supposedly working coil. What am I missing? Or do I retest every thing? Would like to re test but need directions on multi meter tests? Thanks

You say you have had the stator tested, did they test the trigger unit too?

Try this, Its a Warrior but same 348 motor.

In my experience the resistance test doesn't work too well. You can check that the three stator wires are roughly the same resistance, and that they don't short to earth but, apart from checking for no resistance in the trigger unit, the only other check is to find out if the trigger and stator coils are making volts (AC) when you spin the engine over.

Ok. That makes sense. I'm really starting to think their test was not conclusive and I do have a stator or trigger problem. Should a guy replace both at the same time or try the trigger first?

Yamaha Stators are pretty good. My 1989 350 Big Bear is still running with the original stator. My SP500 would not start just because the trigger coil (Plus coil) was just dirty. Even if its a stator there are places that rebuild them for half price. |
It depends on the wiring but most adult quads will run with a faulty stator as battery power feeds back through the regulator, so try a new trigger unit.

Ok. Thanks guys. I will try to find a trigger. Hard to locate parts where I live but will search Internet, eBay etc.
Thanks again. |
