Outer front CV boot 350 Grizzly. Is this correct?

I changed CV boots before on my Polaris and the inner boot on a Yamaha. I ripped my outer front boot on my Yamaha and looked on you tube, and according to it I have to take off the inner CV boot to slip on the new outer cv boot? (Skip to 4:23 in video).

Is this true? I will need two extra claps for the still good inner CV boot to be reinstalled. Why not just have the retainer clips on the outer cv as well so it can be remove on its own?

Here is the part pic on a 350.

Looks to me the clip (b) hold on the outer cv(a) and that's it . like on a Polaris.
Is the above video wrong?

Yes, that little spring ring is all that stops the shaft from coming off the outer CV but that is exactly what it does. We used to buy new outer CV joints but found that fitting them often required destroying the old one to get at that ring. Our supplier now just sells the whole driveshaft assembly. If you need to fit an outer boot it is no big deal taking them both off. Most OE Honda and Suzuki boot clips can be re-used, I think Yams are the same.

Well I just finished and the video was correct. You have to take the inner CV and boot off to slide the new outer boot on.

What a drag because the outer boot kit only supplies grease and two bands for the new boot. So you supply the grease for the inner CV and have to hope you can reuse the old inner boot bands as well.
That did not work out to good because I broke the large inner boot band trying to reinstall it.
Where can I buy a single boot band without buying a whole new boot kit?

Check your local car repair shop, if they are like me they re-fit the old clip on a new boot, only using the new clip if they have to, so ending up with a drawer full of spare clips.

I got lucky Yamaha does sell the bands separately and the dealer had one in stock. I like the Yamaha bands they are quick with no special tool. Just flip with you thumb and crimp with normal pliers.

Yes, that type is used on Honda and Suzuki OE boots. For years we got new boots with a type of clip that you were supposed to tension with a special tool, but our supplier never had the tool in stock, so we got used to re-using the old clip, if possible. Tool finally came about two years ago, just before the supplier changed to selling boots with the type of clip shown in your video.
