2007 Yamaha grizzly 450 start issues
 

New to atvs so excuse my ignorance. Got this atv recently and has no issues but with this cold weather a bit of trouble starting before plowing. I would push the start button and have to leave the choke open for a while and fade in the gas to get it warmed up. A couple times I didn’t have the choke enough and the solenoid type thing would click by the rear left wheel well. If I tried again either the choke in a different position then it would turn over again and I could get it going. Once started, no issues. However, this most recent time it was really stinking cold and I tried to start and couldn’t get it started and eventually the clicking under the wheel well stopped and now no noise and no attempt for it to turn over. The dash still comes on but nothing happens. I charged the battery and still nothing. Where to start? I assume the issues are some type of starter soloenoid or the starter itself. Another issue is I tried to pull start and the cord was very to to pull and I couldn’t get it to pull out smoothly. About halfway through it gets very hard and won’t pull smooth. Any help appreciated!!!

Update- I read about how you are supposed to pull the starter rope until it gets hard and the cylinder is at Tdc and then release and pull again and it started. So I guess that means battery is bad??? Still could be starter relay also but ruled out starter right? Thanks

The pull start and electric start are completely separate. If you get a click when you press the start button it could be a faulty electric starter, or it could be the solenoid faulty. If you don't get a click but the dash is lit up, it could still be the solenoid faulty but can be a faulty start button, or the wires to/from it, or the neutral lock-out not working properly. With a bad battery, or battery connections, the dash usually dims when you press the start button, and if you try the lights, they are very dim too, but brighten once you get it started on the pull start.

I would test your battery and go from there. It sounds like a week battery to me since you've had it turn over and than stop with the choke on it takes more juice to start it. How old is your battery? If its the original im sure it needs to be replaced. If it tests out good than look at the connections on solenoid and battery. If they are good and still doesn't work jump the 2 posts on the solenoid and see if it goes if it does than your solenoid is bad.
