Default 2005 Yamaha Bruin starting question

I just picked up an 05 Bruin 350 2x4 ES. I can only start it with the electric start while it is in Neutral. I thought maybe holding in a brake would bypass that? Can anyone confirm? If so, then something is not working as I've tried both handles and the foot brake.

Thanks

Only start it in neutral. Starting a bike in gear puts added strain on starter and one way clutch. That is one reason why Yamaha put the "lock-out" on in the first place. Some makers like Suzuki do let you override it with brakes on, not sure about Yams, but don't think so, as the newer models are a pain for faulty gearchange indicator switches, and if you can't get the N or P light you can't start them.
